Meanwhile back in NY

32 bridge I left Rochester in 1979 in the pursuit of new adventures in cultures, food, personalities and the differences and common thoughts people share.

It’s been beyond my dreams of fun, traveling around the world and living in several places: San Francisco, Atlanta, Tiburon and Mill Valley, Santa Fe, Cabo San Lucas, Oregon, Hilton Head Island and now Sonoma. But I feel the time has come to go back to my roots and explore the local food and wine scene there.

I’ve had friends send me Rochester food specialties and realize I miss those old flavors. I’ve decided to pack up my antiques, most of which are heading back from going on all my travels, and come back with me.  I’ve often said that my furniture has seen more of North America than most people.

The food and wine scene has exploded in Western New York and it will be fun to revisit old haunts and explore new.

Revival of Classic Recipes

CookingTipsTV’s concept was born 20 years ago with the idea of showcasing classic recipes from around the world. Little did I realize, these recipes would still have “legs” after all these years. The fun part is that they’re more popular then ever!

In fact, some of the chef’s who are presenting in the videos, are now food ambassadors for their country. It’s no surprise. These talented individuals are passionate and knowledgeable about their indigenous foods and convey their message with pride.

Flash to HTML5 Video Conversion is Happening!

August 15th, 2011

It will be 20 years in 2012 when I first started working on the cooking around the world video project. It has been a series of incredible ups and downs and it looks like the final chapter of this series is happening soon.

My extremely talented webmaster has started converting the videos so they will play on Apple mobile devices. This is been a long road for both of us and the end is in sight! Since Apple, or more exactly, Steve Jobs, doesn’t like Adobe’s Flash software, converting videos to play on Apple mobile devices, on a small independent site, has been quite the chore. Flash plays on all devices except Apple mobile, so this conversion was necessary but a royal pain.

The good news is that he has cracked the code and all the videos will be live, soon!

I’ll keep you posted on the progress. Plus, the enhanced e-cookbook, Cooking Tips From Around the World, a Culinary Travel Adventure is also getting converted to additional formats to support mobile devices. Lots of great improvements are happening and I appreciate your visits to the site. Your suggestions are always welcome!

Lessons Learned – Dealing with an ebook Publisher

Years ago I traveled solo around the world and videoed cooking schools and culinary professionals teaching their indigenous cuisine. It was a great adventure and I had hoped to get a television series produced with my footage only to find out, I didn’t follow union rules of having a huge crew follow me along. I was told a gutsy woman could not and should not, do this on her own. So, reluctantly, I put the whole project on hold thinking it will have a life of its own one day.

Then came broadband speed! The internet came alive with video and yes, my footage lives on my website and I’m thrilled to see these food ambassadors from around the world teaching people about their food, culture and style.

And then came the birth of enhanced ebooks! Electronic books with photos, video links and an interactivity that brings the recipes alive with how to instruction. But here’s the kicker: my publisher doesn’t do jack.

So many people are thinking about self-publishing since they have ideas and ebooks are a hot commodity at the moment. It’s an exciting time and producing an ebook is not rocket science. If you have content, which is the most important element, you can cut and paste your way into a pdf file or better yet, into epub and viola, you are an author.

Now comes the hard part: Marketing and Sales. If you go through a third party aka publisher, make sure they have a marketing plan to spread the word about your ebook. Otherwise, like me, you’re doing everything on your own with absolutely no support but having to pay commission on sales you generate.

Everyone and their brother is producing digital products. But quality rules and as the general public becomes more and more comfortable with having their reading material on a computer, as an option to print, enhanced ebooks are an exciting learning tool.

So do your homework. Content is king and don’t be fooled by charming hyped-up so-called publishers who will entice you with their lies they believe. They are most likely only in it because it sounds cool and as I’ve experienced, don’t have a clue about what they’re doing. Simply inserting text does not make a publisher.

What were you thinking?

I get asked this all the time.

To make a long story short, I decided to travel the world solo filming culinary professionals teaching their classic indigenous cuisine with food items available worldwide. I previously worked with on-location crews filming shows for cable, am a devout foodie, was recently divorced and ready to have another adventure.

I started in New Zealand and shot their green lipped mussels, lamb and more very fresh seafood. I was amazed at the level of sophistication the chefs, restaurants and locals knew about food. Same with Australia. They take food very seriously and I was busy with several cooking schools both in the big cites and in the outback. Hong Kong and dim sum was the next stop. With it’s bustling traffic and people’s energy, became one of my favorite destinations in Asia. Singapore is a safe place for women traveling alone and since it’s located in a strategic position in the trading lanes of commerce, has a variety of indigenous cuisines. They all vary but have a nice spicy heat to make you sweat and offset the high heat and humidity.

Bali was supposed to be a resting place since I was on the road for several months and feeling pretty tired, but instead turned into a unique setting for their cuisine. Bangkok and the Cooking School at the Oriental, was amazing and the recipes are classic and delicious with great tips!

Britain became the next stop and I traveled through the countryside finding purveyors and culinary professionals teaching about traditional English fare. CookingTipsTV Video Contest Winners!

The votes are in, the scores have been tabulated, opinions given and we’ve decided on our winners of the first video contest.

The Grand Prize of an Enclume Pot Rack is awarded to Piper High School in Sunrise, Fl, where they submitted videos from pre-professional culinary program students. They were supported by the school staff and student body who energetically voted and viewed the videos. Congratulations Piper HS for a great culinary program kick-starting these students to a culinary career and for submitting the videos and winning the grand prize.

Jonathon Martinez, a Piper HS student, won Florida regional with his Breaded Tilapia and Mango Salsa video who also received the most votes and views. Madgi Zold, the Hungarian Gourmet, won for her traditional Hungarian videos and tips. The Busetti’s won for their Italian and Greek videos; John Ives from MA, won Northeast Regional with his Boiled Corned Beef and Cher Lytle from LA, with her Very LA Spicy Mac and Cheese. From the Southeast Mary Leverette and her Apple Jelly video won that region and a late entry prize goes to Angie Smith and her Peach Nut Chicken. Prizes also go to Chef Crow for unique creative style and Gene with his Contemporary Pasta for being the first entry into the contest!

Barbara Grandvoinet has joined

I am very pleased to announce that Barbara Grandvoinet, has joined as Editor Extraordinaire.

Born and raised in Paris, Barbara now lives in San Francisco as a director, producer and editor. Her film Pas De Deux won Best of Festival at the Berkeley Film Festival in 2005 and Children of the Trains (in post-production) is gaining attention worldwide. She’s currently producing a documentary about the National Film Registry, the power of movies and the importance of preservation entitled “Lost Forever” and a documentary about children in a remote village of Bolivia “Welcome to Yanayo”. She produces, writes and edits segments frequently broadcast on national television, as well as, documentaries, films, web videos and TV shows.

Her past work with the PBS/American Masters series includes: Julliard, F. Scott Fitzgerald: Winter Dreams, Robert Capa: In love and War and Clint Eastwood.

Barbara brings over a decade of expertise in preproduction, production and post production. Additionally, she is the Producer of Pacific Fusion, a weekly news magazine and freelances for major film and TV productions around the world. Cooking Video Contest ends March 31 with incentives!

The cooking video contest at is ending on March 31st. There are great prizes including Grand Prize: Enclume’s most popular pot rack model for over three decades! This classic oval design is modeled after the first pot racks created for the King of France by his chefs three centuries ago.
